Sabbatical

What is a sabbatical?

It is an extended time from routine ministry duties for the purpose of rest, and a refreshing in the Spirit. It is meant to provide a time of renewal for our pastor(s) to refocus for a clear perspective on upcoming ministry, a time to be with family, and also a time to focus on health and wellness. It helps prevent ministry burnout and an opportunity for true sabbath rest.

What does the bible say?

We can find some great scriptures echoing this need in the church. The term comes from the Old Testament idea of Sabbath, the Hebrew word means “Rest”.

Throughout scriptures, starting of course in Genesis 2:1-3, that God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh. Through the Old Testament, we find passages where God asks his people to devote the seventh day to God as a day of rest. Leviticus 23:3, Deuteronomy 5:13-14.

In Exodus 34:21 we read “Six days you shall work, but on the seventh day you shall rest. In plowing time and in harvest you shall rest.” Even though life is busy and this may be an important time with so much going on, God calls us to rest.

As we will be getting into in Ecclesiastes over the coming weeks, we read in 3:1 “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven”.

The demands of Jesus’ ministry were so great, that even he needed time to be with this father (Matthew 14:23).

Why have the elders decided to grant this sabbatical?

Following scripture, and for long-term ministry health of our church, we have unanimously agreed to this sabbatical. Glenn and Janice have given almost 12 years to this ministry, and we want to ensure they have a chance to rest and recharge. The family benefits of focusing on their marriage, children and grandchildren, as well as healthy hearts and minds are a priority for us as well.

What is the length of the sabbatical?

8 weeks starting February 1st - March 31st, 2021.

What is the pastoral coverage during this time?

The elders are assuming the administrative responsibilities during this time, as well as pastoral care, and Sunday morning setup. Worship gatherings will continue from the Rock Church.

Our sister church, Northview has generously offered us pulpit fill, and we will be following a series alongside them in Ecclesiastes over our usual live stream, Sunday mornings at 10:00am on Facebook Live.

North View will also provide study guide materials for our weekly MCG’s.

What is the our role as the church?

Pray, encourage and support during this time of rest.

Respect the Davies’ time away, but of course say hi when you see them around town.

  • Glenn’s church email will have Vacation DND on.

  • Email the elders with questions, needs or concerns.

  • Support the elders as well in assisting with responsibilities.

  • Glenn and Janice will also be tuning into the service, be sure to say hello through the comments.

  • Love each other well, attend Sunday morning service, commit to MCG, faithfully give and serve in our church body.

A note from Glenn and Janice

We both want to thank the elders and our church family for recognizing our need for rest and renewal at this time. While away it is our desire to be seeking the Lord’s will, His presence and His encouragement in times of fasting and prayer. We also plan to have some fun together.

We hope you’ll understand that if you do not hear from us it isn’t because we aren’t thinking of you. Love in Christ, Janice & Glenn.
